How to get testimonials

How to Ask for (and Get!) Brilliant Testimonials — Even If You’re Flat Out or Forget to Ask

One of the most common things my clients ask me is: “How do I actually get good testimonials?” And let me tell you, I get it — between quoting new jobs, managing projects, and doing the actual work, chasing testimonials often falls into the “I’ll get to it later” pile… which usually means never.

I’ve been guilty of this too. However, over time, I’ve discovered a few simple systems that make asking for and collecting testimonials significantly easier — and more effective. Plus, it’s not just about adding feel-good comments to your website. Solid testimonials:

  • Build trust with new leads (especially for tradies, finance/legal pros, and consultants)
  • Can boost your SEO — especially when they’re posted on Google Business Profile
  • Help you refine your services by spotting what clients value most

Here’s your no-fuss guide to getting quality testimonials—even if you’re juggling a dozen other things.

Start with Google Business Profile: Your SEO Goldmine

Before we get into forms and templates, let’s talk Google. If you’re going to ask for a testimonial, Google Business Profile (GBP) should be your first stop.

Why? Because:

  • It helps with local SEO
  • Reviews show up directly in search results
  • It builds instant trust when potential clients Google your business

Here’s how to make it easy for your clients:

  1. Grab your GBP review link (you can find this in your Google Business dashboard)
  2. Shorten it using a tool like bit.ly
  3. Send a simple email (template below)

“Hey [Client], if you’re happy with the work we did together, would you mind leaving a quick review on Google? It really helps others find me. Here’s the link: [Your Google Review Link]”

What If They Can’t or Won’t Use Google?

Not everyone has a Google account (or wants to sign in). If your client can’t leave a review on Google, your backup is a testimonial form you can host with:

  • Google Forms
  • Typeform
  • JotForm
  • Or even Gravity Forms if we’ve built your website — easy to embed and style

Make sure your form is short and sharp, with these question prompts:

  1. What hesitations did you have before working with me?
  2. What stood out most about the experience?
  3. What results or benefits have you seen?
  4. Would you recommend me to others? If so, why?
  5. Anything else you’d like to add?
  6. Do I have your permission to use your feedback and photo?

Also: give them the option to upload a headshot or logo if they’re happy to be featured publicly.

When Should You Ask?

Timing is everything. The sweet spot is:

  • Right after you’ve wrapped up a project or service — when the client’s still pumped and the value you delivered is fresh in their mind
  • A few weeks later, if you’re aiming to showcase results or improvements (especially for coaching, financial advice, or strategic consulting)

You can even do both: get a quick testimonial at the end, and follow up down the track with a results-based one to turn into a more detailed case study.

Email Template: Quick & Easy

Hi [Name],

It was such a pleasure working with you on [Project]. If you’ve got 2 minutes, I’d be super grateful if you’d leave a quick review on Google — it helps other great clients find me:

[Insert Google Review Link]

If you’d prefer to fill out a short form instead, here’s that option: [Insert Form Link]

Thanks heaps, [Your Name]

Where to Use Testimonials Once You Have Them

  • Your Google Business profile (priority #1!)
  • Website homepage and service pages
  • Sales pages, proposals, and quotes
  • Social media posts
  • Case studies
  • Your email newsletter

Don’t overthink it—start small. One GBP review request, one backup form, one happy client at a time. The more testimonials you collect, the easier it is to win trust, boost your visibility, and book better clients.
